7 Incredibly Useful Tools for Evaluating a Web Design

An effective web design is one in which your users are able to find information quickly and in a logical fashion.

Do they visit the content you want them to visit? Are they looking in the right places of your web page? Are you able to keep your user’s attention, or do they just leave quickly?

It’s not just about the content either. If your design loads slowly – or if moving from one section to another takes a long time – it affects the user’s experience.

These things can be the make-or-break factors between a user clicking on a link to find more information, or the back button to find it elsewhere.

Some things to consider:

  • Are important information being seen by the user?
  • Are the navigation and action items intuitive?
  • Is the user being directed to sections in a logical manner?
  • Does the web page load quickly enough to not turn away the user?

If you’re interested in analyzing and optimizing your page layout – this article gives you some extremely useful tools that you can use to help.

Steve Jobs death has been greatly exaggerated

It’s all true, almost. Bloomberg ran an obituary Wednesday (Aug 27th 2008) for the man who made the computer as easy to use as the telephone, remade animated films, hooked the world on digital music and turned the phone into a truly smart, pocketable computer. There’s just one tiny detail Bloomberg’s write-up got wrong: Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs lives.

10 Futuristic User Interfaces

Good user interfaces are crucial for good user experience. It doesn’t matter how good a technology is — if we, designers, don’t manage to make user interface as intuitive and attractive as possible, the technology will hardly reach a breakthrough. To gain the interest in a new product or technology, users need to understand its advantages or find themselves impressed or involved.

And here is where creative ideas and unusual interface approaches become important. Innovative doesn’t mean usable and usable hardly means innovative. As usual, it’s necessary to find an optimal trade-off. And some user interfaces manage to achieve just that.

Here is an article showing 10 recent developments in the field of user experience design. Most techniques may seem very futuristic, but some of them are already reality. And in fact, they are extremely impressive. Keep in mind: they can become ubiquitous in the next years.

As Seen by the Color Blind

For those of us who see colors just fine, it is hard to imagine what those with color blindness are seeing. Luckily humans are smart and have created technology like the Color Blind Web Page Filter.

This post also uses same filter to demonstrate the different types of colorblindness, allows you to view what your site looks like to people with each type of color blindness.

Read this interesting post below or directly test your site by going to Color Blind Web Page Filter.

Why there are no viruses for OS X

Just came across an interesting discussion on Whirlpool, where a poster asks why there are no viruses for OS X. The quick and obvious answer by a few “enthusiast experts” was that the market share of OS X is so small that nobody really bothers writing any malware for Mac.

Yes, this is the most common answer you get from people who also answer “right-click” when asked what Macs can’t do that Windows can. Sigh!

I liked the reply by the user TwoFruits, so I thought I’d share his very down-to-earth analysis of the malware absence phenomenon on Macs.
